SEO Basics: How to Actually Rank on Google in 2026

SEO advice online tends to swing between two extremes: outdated tricks that stopped working years ago, or overly technical jargon that's hard to actually act on. Here's the version we tell our own clients — the fundamentals that still reliably work.

1. Answer the actual question

Google's whole job is matching a search to the best answer. Before writing anything, ask: what is someone actually trying to find out when they type this? Pages that answer the real question — clearly, near the top — consistently outrank pages that dance around it.

2. Fix the technical basics first

Slow load times, broken links, and pages that aren't mobile-friendly quietly cap how high you can rank, no matter how good the content is. A technical audit is usually the highest-leverage first step for a site that's been neglected.

3. Build real internal links

Every page on your site should link to a few other relevant pages. It helps visitors find more of what they need, and it helps search engines understand which pages matter most.

4. Earn links the boring way

Guest posts, partnerships, local directories, and genuinely useful content still earn links in 2026 — there's no shortcut that's replaced this.

5. Be patient, then be consistent

SEO compounds. A page published today might not move much for weeks, but a site that consistently publishes useful, well-structured content for six months looks completely different from one that posted once and stopped.

If you want a clear-eyed audit of where your site actually stands today, that's usually the best place to start before spending on anything else.
